Brief History of the Institute of Data Processing Management (IDPM)
The Institute of Data Processing Management (IDPM) of Nigeria is a recognized professional body dedicated to promoting effective data processing and system management. It operates under the legal framework of the Companies and Allied Matters Decree No. 1 of 1990. IDPM of Nigeria serves as the national counterpart to the former Institute of Data Processing Management of London, which later became the Institute of Management Information Systems (IMIS) and is now a constituent of the British Computer Society (BCS). As a result, members of IDPM Nigeria have broad eligibility to join the British Computer Society, enhancing their international professional recognition.
The institute (IDPM) Nigeria has grown to become one of the leading and fastest-growing professional bodies in the country. Its certifications are widely accepted for admission into various academic programs—ranging from undergraduate degrees to postgraduate diplomas and master’s degrees—across a range of disciplines such as Management-related and Computer science -related courses. These qualifications are recognized in various tertiary institutions (Universities, Polytechnics, etc) and professional bodies both within Nigeria and internationally.

Aims and Objectives
The primary aims and objectives of the Institute are to:
- Serve as a central authoritative body for professionals currently engaged or aspiring to enter the field of data processing and system management.
- Offer training programs and conduct professional examinations in data processing, data analytics, and system management.
- Award professional membership certifications to qualified individuals as approved by the governing council.
- Organize seminars, symposia, and conferences for its members and other stakeholders.
- Confer professional titles such as Analyst, Senior Analyst, and Chief Analyst based on qualifications and standards set by the council.
- Recognize outstanding individuals by bestowing meritorious awards on those who have significantly contributed to the advancement of data processing and the broader cause of humanity.
Implementation Strategies
To fulfill its objective the Institutes is committed to:
- Establishing manpower development institutions, either independently or in collaboration with other accredited training institutions.
- Setting up branches and training centers across Nigeria to facilitate nationwide access to data processing education.
- Publishing journals, newsletters, magazines, and books that promote professional development in the field.
- Assisting members in managing computer bureaus and offering counseling and advisory services when needed.
- Providing consultancy services to government bodies and business organizations on matters related to efficient data processing management.
- Organizing study tours and professional visits to institutions both within Nigeria and abroad for benchmarking and knowledge exchange.
